The Savory Yogurt of My Dreams
Every trade show I’ve gone to in the past few years have said “savory is the new sweet.” Consumers have become increasingly sugar adverse and the trend may pick up further steam with the new “added sugars” on nutrition labels. But some aisles of the grocery store haven’t caught up. I was shopping for yogurt at Trader Joe’s today and every single “flavored” yogurt was more like “added sugar” yogurt. There have been a few savory yogurts out there, but the one of my dreams is kind of like the “fruit on the bottom” yogurt I used to eat before I realized they were “loads of sugar and a little fruit on the bottom.”
Why not make that bottom layer something savory? I’m thinking
- Caponata
- Muhammara
- Garlic-lemon tahini
- Nam Prik Pao — thai chile jam
- Harissa
A lot of these are already used with yogurt in their respective cuisines.
So basically, someone please make this happen. Or at least put some more savory yogurt options in the store.
