The law and medicine thing is really interesting to me too because I know women in these fields who describe things that horrify me even as a woman in tech who has experienced sexism. Why do so many women keep going into those fields then? I was almost one of them too — the only reason I didn’t go to law school is because I graduated in the recession and saw a lot of my friends in law struggle.

I think it’s because these are career paths you can choose around your junior/senior year when you’re making decisions based more around practical necessities than your interests. You’re also older and wiser.

I chose a major based on my interests, I chose a career based on income, job market, etc. If you’re thinking coding in your junior/senior year what are your options? It’s too late to transfer to CS and still graduate on time. There are boot camps but a lot of them have bad job prospects and cost a lot of money.

It would be interesting if software had a professional educational track the way medicine and law does.
